Diskant’s favourite musical wankfest Instal is happening a bit earlier and over 2 days this year (16th & 17th October). There might be a noisy day and a trancey day. One day there’s Keiji Haino and Derek Bailey, the other’s Charlemagne Palestine, Current 93 and Six Organs of Admittance. Admittedly I don’t know a huge amount about (most / all) the acts but that’s never stopped it being great before.
And this Saturday (11th) at Stereo, el Hombre Trajeado are playing with The Dragon Rapide from Leeds. I saw them in Newcastle a while back and they were dead good I would being going to see them if I was in Glasgow.

Hi
Just to add to the post about Audioscope with some info about the whole Damo Suzuki thing. The band with Damo for that gig is going to be Phil Welding (Wolves Of Greece/Lords) on the bass, Neil Turpin (Bilge Pump, HiM, Polaris) on drums, Elvis Beetham Wallace (Twinkie/Lords) also on drums, Neil Johnson (Wolves Of Greece/Bob Tilton) on guitar and synth and me on guitar. Fuck knows how this happened but we’re doing a Nottingham show at the Rescue Rooms with him on Sept 14 and then Audioscope. It’s all improvised stuff and we’re aiming for the upper end of the volume scale. So get the car/bus/train/walk/hitch and come along and watch us shit ourselves.

Thanks Chris.
So has refinding the name of the church where John Cage’s As Slowly As Possible is being played. I want to visit that.
The Tchai Ovna call out. If you’re wondering why you should care, one reason is that it’s the first place I saw people beatboxing and not being shit. Acappella Hardcore!

Firstly Blogger has had a redesign so you may be spotting some changes round here. Already you can view our fancy Blogger Profiles to the left instead of those horrendously out of date pop-up profiles. Also means if you only like one of us you can just read their posts on their profile and pretend the rest of us don’t exist. HAHA.
While looking for ATP photos for our ATP Round-up I stumbled across the website for Everett True’s forthcoming post-CTCL magazine Plan B. By the looks of things it’s fairly similar in terms of contributors and subject and thus very much worthy of your time. Check out the three different reviews of ATP for instance. They’ve got a launch issue out soon but they’re posting reviews and stuff on the site all the time as well as blogs from some of the writers including the lovely Andrew Clare and ET himself.
And finally, WHAT THE HELL? story of the week as Freaky Eyed Hobbit BoyTM Elijah Wood gets the chance to take over John Peel’s show for a night. Just ‘cos you saved the world from the wrath of Sauron doesn’t mean you can stand in for John Peel. “Elijah is a really big music fan,” a Radio 1 spokesman said. Well, so am I!
actually, finally, WHERE IS EVERYONE ELSE?

On Saturday I am going to see my mam fly a plane but if I wasn’t then I would be going to the benefit gig at Stereo from 3pm. It’s for the Glasgow Autonomous Project who I met at the SchNews tour the other day and are nice. There’s 3 bands playing, one of which has a cello (I lost the flyer). All glaswegians should go, it’ll be good.
I would try and make this sound as interesting as it really is but I am very tired. Feel free to add some exclamation marks and capital letters to this using a felt-tip pen.

I’m very excited to hear the news that there is another INSTAL festival in Glasgow this year. Their website’s disappeared so find out more via The Arches (scroll down a bit on the right). With this line-up and the fantasticness of the previous 2 events, I shall definitely be there.
AMM: [Keith Rowe, Eddie Prevost, John Tilbury]
Vooredoms: The Boredoms
Merzbow
Ryoji Ikeda
Cosmos
Vibracathedral Orchestra
Paragon Ensemble
Whitehouse
Sun 23 November
4pm-12am £14/£10
Instal, the Arches’ annual new music blow out, is your chance to experience ground breaking and genre defining live experimental music in the unique surroundings of the Arches. In its third year, Instal features one-off performances from some of the most striking artists in contemporary music today.
You’ll also have noted that we now have Chris Summerlin blogging for us. If you don’t know Chris already, I’ll be very surprised but go read his profile by clicking his name on the left there or just go read his always-great columns. We hope to have some other new people blogging soon but they’re all ignoring me just now.

Here’s an interesting project for you called 44 strings since the idea is to release a compilation of tracks by bass and double bass players. It’s organised by the nice people at mrw44 and they’re touting for submissions at the moment so go find out more.

Everyone knows the Oscars suck (especially this year), but on the 15th April they were the cause of one good thing happening to Region 1 DVDs. Miraculously enough, diskant’s favourite anime director HAYAO MIYAZAKI won this year’s “Best Animated Feature” category, with Spirited Away. This has spurred the usually evil Buena Vista Entertainment into capitalising on Miyazaki’s new-found fame (?) and releasing ‘special editions’ of three of his films – all of which have previously been a bugger to track down: Kiki’s Delivery Service, Castle In The Sky, and Spirited Away itself. Even better, despite having high-gloss English soundtracks with such amazing actors as Minnie Driver and Dawson out of Dawson’s Creek doing the dubbing, they’ve all got the original Japanese language versions too; unlike the shitty R1 version of Miyazaki’s best film My Neighbour Totoro (apparently this too will be rereleased by Buena Vista as a special edition in cooperation with Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli, once they’ve wrenched the rights to it away from those nasty cash hounds at Fox Entertainment. I’m not sure when though).
Also, I’d previously never rated Roger Avary much as a scriptwriter or director, but Rules Of Attraction is pretty much everything the adaptation of a Bret Easton Ellis novel I had hoped Mary Hannon’s disappointingly limp farce American Psycho would be.

Here’s some good film news.
And here’s some very bad film news. If you can’t be arsed reading the article, what it boils down to is this: Less money / support of arthouse cinemas in the areas where that support is needed most. If there’s a place in the country where those cinemas can survive without BFI funding it’s London, where there’s enough people to provide an audience for just about anything. Whereas if you live anywhere else but still want to see something different, you’re on your own. Let them watch cack.

“We are delighted to announce that Michael Moore will make a personal appearance at the Cameo on Monday 25 November. After a Q&A session in Screen 1 before the 9pm performance of Bowling for Columbine, he will sign copies of his new book “Stupid White Men” in the Cameo Bar.”
