Flying Matchstick Men are one of those bands everyone in Glasgow has an opinion on. Balancing on a similar love/hate knife edge to bis, their wonky indie glam electropop seems to have won them as many haterz as fans. Here at diskant we lov
e a bit of disco pop especially when it involves girl/boy vocals, a sense of humour and a willingness to prove that ridicule really is nothing to be scared of.
Band members, and what you do in the band:
Graham Peel - Vocals, synth, guitar
Becky Manson - Vocals, synth
Graeme Ronald - Guitar, Synth
Mark O'Donnell - Drums
Gavin Tomson - Bass, Synth
Location: Glasgow
What do you think you sound like, and how different is that from what
other people have said or written about you?
Everyone says we sound like Bis but we don't see it ourselves. I guess we
are trying to be as alternative as possible but as accessible as possible, if that makes sense.
What do you do in your day-to-day lives, other than being Flying
Matchstick Men?
We wait about till we can be in Flying Matchstick Men again.
What are the last couple of albums you bought and are they any good?
I recently started rebuilding my lost collection of add n to (X) records,
they are amazing. Apart from that the album "Ships" by Danielson is pretty brilliant.
What are the best and worst local bands you've seen recently?
<
p>I dont want to inflate any egos or make enemies. The good ones don't know
how good they are and the shit ones think they are brilliant.
What would you be willing to give up/sacrifice for success in your
band? Are you DIY purists or major label aspirationists?
We are DIY purists with major label aspirations.
If you were to date a cartoon animal, who would it be?
Not sure. A gay one, but not too gay. Woody woodpecker.
The best things in life are free - what is your favourite thing that
costs nothing?
Manners.
What's the best lie you've ever told?
That I was sent to a jewish family when I was born by accident.
What have you got in your pockets?
Condoms.
What are your upcoming plans?
Using the condoms in my pocket.
