TV Review

Stars in their Eyes, ITV 16th March 1997

'Stars in their Eyes' brings to mind images of bad Marti Pellow impressions (or even worse - good Marti Pellow impressions). On the 16th of March this year, however, I turned on the TV to find an impersination of none other than Jarvis himself. Hmmn, on one hand this shows that maybe Pulp have finally infiltrated the media - that they could even have real influence.

But, on the other hand, something seems to have gone badly wrong. The dancers gave it away - style wise, Pulp have always been decades out of what is commonly accepted as ‘fashion’. But the point is that this is irrelevant, and they somehow transcend this and end up looking as stylish as anyone else. The dancers (or whatever idiot was responsible for them anyway) clothes were deliberately tacky - very ‘50 year old slightly mad english teacher tank tops - style’. Their dance was deliberately ironic, at least I hope so, because it resembled the worst early seventies rubbish. Their props were utterly baffling - tacky stuffed dogs on leads, vinyl handbags. Someone somewhere has seriously mis-interpreted them.

And the singer himself - Gareth Dickinson - Well, he tried, and actually, he mainly succeeded. Except perhaps for a few of his arm movements - more Chris Barrie than Jarvis Cocker. Anyway, he won, so that’s alright then, isn't it.
