Tunic - Also Ran                                     Love Train - Pube16

I didn't get "Also Ran" at first. I bought it on some whim, listened to it once, and relegated it to my pile of 7" singles. A week ago I listened it to it once again on the off chance. Since then I haven't stopped listening to it. Why? Well, It isn't breaking any barriers musically, but that's surely missing the point. The whole thing generates such a feeling of resigned acceptance - "Deserving more / But getting less / Settling for second best / Well is it true / That I loved you / Well who's to say / I guess it doesn't matter anyway" And the music itself is almost incredibly evocative - You can feel the regret - or more the resignation of the singer. I almost feel like I am intruding into their world, but at the same time I completely recognise that feeling. Definitely the best thing to come out of Belfast for a long, long time.
